Lake Mburo

On Saturday, Alisha and I had the opportunity to go with the Drisner family on a day trip to Lake Mburo. This is the closest national park to Masaka, about an hour and half drive away. As soon as we drove into the park it started to rain but that didn't stop the animals from giving us a great view. Before we even reached the gate we had seen lots of gazelles, zebras, topi and water buck.

The first half of our game drive it was raining pretty hard so we stayed in the cab of the truck and took pictures out the window. In the park we saw a few monkeys (including a baby one!) and warthogs. We drove out to the lake but didn't bother to get out of the truck because of the rain. I was really hoping to see some hippos but even though we drove down the lakeside track, we didn't see any. By noon the rain had lightened up so Alisha and I hopped on the back of the truck with the kids. It was really neat to see the view from this perspective and as we drove we hummed the Indiana Jones theme song.

We stopped for lunch at Mihingo Lodge. This place is a five star resort carved into the rocks on the peak of a hill overlooking the game park. The view was breathtaking. We paid for a delicious buffet lunch and then got to swim in the pool for free. As you can see from the pictures, this rustic drop-off pool overlooked a watering hole where there were various animals gathered. It was absolutely beautiful. We spent a relaxing afternoon at the pool and then headed back home. 

Lake Mburo was a great introduction to game driving in Africa. I can't wait to go to Queen Elizabeth at the end of November!
